Non-fiction stories such Saving the Sand Dunes in our reading books are perfect for analyzing the comprehension strategy of cause and effect. In this article, elementary students come up with the idea to bury recycled Christmas trees in the sand dunes to trap blowing sand and fight erosion! The children also learned that signal words such as "so", "because" and "when" alert us to the cause and effect when we are reading. To focus on the skill, we kicked off the week with a very simple picture book ... Cookie's Week .... the kitty's crazy antics are the CAUSE of many disastrous EFFECTS throughout the house.
